Even though I can establish the VPN connection from the Vista machine and establish RDP connections to remote hosts, I cannot access network resources via UNC paths - the error indicates the network path cannot be found - could this underlying problem also be the reason I cannot join the machine to the domain?

the Vista Home could access the folder without problem. However, allow anonymous access is not safe for your file server. So, I strangely suggest you replace the Vista Home with Vista Business or XP Pro. Then, you can access the shared folder from client with domain user account. Hope that help.
